PLAY is a cookbook zine featuring recipes, essays, and artwork from a community of LGBTQ+ chefs, writers, and artists, including Andy Baraghani, Brontez Purnell, Julia Turshen, Rebekah Pepler, Magdalena O’Neal, Jon Kung, Isabel Rower, Tyler Givens, Michelle Hyun Kim, Sarah Stellwag, Preeti Mistry, Telly Justice, Lisa Fernandes, Chala June, Martine Guttierez, Lo Alalay, Meech Boakye, Silver Iocovozzi, Leo Kirts, and Alyssa Nitchun.

Created as a way to celebrate and nourish the queer community, proceeds from all PLAY projects will be donated to queer mutual aid initiatives.

All proceeds from this volume of the zine will go to two mutual aid projects addressing housing and food insecurity among the queer and trans communities: The Okra Project in NYC and Intransitive in Arkansas.

By buying a copy of the zine, you will be directing funds to queer mutual aid projects. Zines will be available during the event with a pay-as-you-wish option so that you can donate as much as you’d like to these initiatives!

The project is being led by Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Ludwig Hurtado, Senior Editor, Colleen Hamilton, and Creative Director, Gabriella Lewis. We're three folks in the food and media space who got tired of seeing tired Pride month stories about "queer food" that don't address the actual problem of food insecurity for the most vulnerable among us. We felt it important to center these narratives as an antidote to “corporate pride.” We were all devastated by the ongoing attacks on trans youth— which have led to alarming rates of homelessness and food insecurity—and wanted to tap into the long history of queer mutual aid.

IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING INFORMATION: The zine is currently listed as Pay What You Can, with a minimum of $14 for the zine and $6 for domestic shipping. For international shipping, we simply ask that folks opt to pay a “fair price” considering the cost of shipping.

Where's the money going?

Every PLAY project will direct proceeds to different organizations that address the problems of housing and food insecurity affecting the LGBTQ community. For this first PLAY release, we're donating our proceeds to two organizations committed to these efforts: The Okra Project and Intransitive.

This zine is raising funds for The Okra Project:

"Our mutual aid collective is focused on supporting Black Trans people and alleviating the barriers that our community faces. We envision a safe, abundant, and equitable life for Black Trans people across the United States, and our service pillars reflect this vision."

This zine is raising funds for Intransitive

"Intransitive works to advance the cause of Trans liberation in Arkansas through art, education, advocacy, organizing and culture in order to create effective systemic change and on-the-ground impact. We focus on supporting and building the leadership of Trans people with the commitment to a vision and strategy rooted in the grassroots experience of Trans migrants of color."
